Edmonton named as host city for 2021 World Masters Athletics Indoor Championships
(Edmonton, AB) – Edmonton Events, in partnership with Athletics Alberta, is pleased to announce that Edmonton has been awarded as the official host city of the World Masters Athletics (WMA) Indoor Championships to take place in April 2021.
The WMA Championships, a biennial, international Track & Field competition for masters athletes age 35 and older, will gather over 2,500 participants, including former Olympic athletes, to compete in our city.
“We are extremely honoured to host this prestigious championship,” said Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson. “The social, economic and reputational benefits of hosting high-calibre athletic events such as this are significant; they increase the vibrancy of our city, inspire citizens to pursue an active lifestyle, and add to our reputation as a premiere sports tourism destination.”
Edmonton Events, a strategic partnership between Edmonton Tourism and the City of Edmonton, has been instrumental in attracting numerous athletics events to the city, including the IAAF World Championships in Athletics (2001), Edmonton International Track Classic (2010 – 2014), Canadian Track & Field Championships + Rio Selection (2016), and the upcoming Canadian Masters Indoor Championships (2019). Edmonton’s reputation as a world-renowned sports destination has garnered international notoriety, as Edmonton is Canada’s top ranked city on Sportcal’s 2018 Global Sports Cities Index, which ranks over 600 cities globally.
Canada has hosted previous iterations of the WMA Indoor and Outdoor Championships (formerly World Association of Veteran Athletes Championships) three times since its inception in 1975. Kamloops, BC was the last Canadian city to host the World Masters Indoor Championships. With Toronto set to host the 2020 WMA Outdoor Championships, 2021 will mark only the fifth competition on Canadian soil, and the first for Edmonton.
The next WMA Indoor Championships will be held in Torun, Poland in 2019.
