Welcome to the ICAN Run Jump Throw at Home!

These resources/ lessons plans were inspired by using the Run Jump Throw Wheel Athletics Canada NCCP Teaching Resource.

Each Monday starting March 30th, 2020 we will release the weekly lesson plan.  Each lesson plan advances in physical literacy for 9 weeks, and the 10th lesson culminates into the ICAN Games.

These resources were developed for you. Moms, Dads, Teachers, Aunts, Uncles… Everyone who would like to have track and field inspired physical literacy in a simple 10 lesson plan.  Each lesson includes adaptations for physical limitations, as well as, Outdoor or Indoor modifications for you.

… Now keep in mind you may need to use some creativity in your at home resources because you may not have everything listed in our plans.  Substitute anything you feel works.

Equipment Needs

Each lesson details equipment you can use, but you can supplement/substitute anything around the house that you deem safe and functional for the purpose of the lesson.

What age groups are these lesson plans for?

  • ICAN Run Jump Throw was created for Grades k – 6, but you will need to adapt lesson plans for the skill level of the participant if you feel the plans are to advanced.

Can I use this for anyone older than Grade 6?

  • 100% Yes.  The purpose of these lessons are for kids general movement skills, physical literacy, and skill building for sport.  The Beginner 10 lessons were focused on grades K – 6, and intermediate 10 lessons were focused on grades 3 – 9+, but you can mix and match to suit your participants as desired.

Can I mix and match the lessons?

  • Yes.  You know your participants better than us, but we do recommend doing skill building in the progression they were written.

What learning outcomes can I expect from these lessons?

  • Experience & demonstrate nonlocomotor, locomotor, sending & receiving skills as they relate to running, jumping, throwing & applicable adaptive skills.
  • Show cooperation, specifically teamwork.
  • Display effort and willingness to participate.
  • Demonstrate safety through listening skills and participation.
  • Achieve activity goals that are challenging.

Are these lessons inclusive of PARA?

Yes, each lesson has adaptation suggestions.  Yes, we don’t list all of the adaptations possible, and we will need the facilitator of lessons or activities to deliver additional suggestions within their comfort level.

Lesson #1 Learn to Train Running

Introduction
Before the activity, introduce the unit by telling the participants that they will be starting a new unit where they will be participating in many activities that improve their ability to run/wheel, jump, and throw. At the end of the 9 lessons, we will be celebrating our successes by having a Run, Jump, Throw Games!

Lesson #1 will focus on learning the proper form of running.

ICAN Run

ICAN Lesson #2 Beginner and Intermediate

Introduction

Beginner – In this lesson, will be practicing running. We will review some of the basic movements in the first game. The main teaching points today will focus on the body alignment and the arm swing.

Intermediate – In this lesson, will be practicing hurdle running. We will review some of the hurdle rhythm in the first game. The main teaching points today will focus on the hurdle rhythm and the basic leg movements.

ICAN Lesson #3 Beginner and Intermediate

Introduction – Learn to Train Running

Beginner & Intermediate –  In these lessons, you will be practicing running. During the opening game have the students review some of the points from lesson one and two (lifting the knees up, body alignment and arm movement).

Lesson #4 - Learning to Train Jumping

Introduction

Beginner – In this lesson, will be practicing jumping. We will be teaching the students how to do a proper standing long jump by isolating the initial small movement and adding the other joint movements throughout the lesson.

Intermediate – In this lesson, will be practicing jumping. We will be teaching the students how to do a running long jump. The main areas that will be focused on are the run up and the take off.

Lesson #5 - Learning to Train Jumping

Introduction

Beginner – In this lesson, will be practicing jumping. You can review the jumping technique from lesson four prior to the fist warm-up game. The main teaching point for this lesson will strongly focus on safe landings (quiet landings).

Intermediate – In this lesson, will be practicing jumping. You can review the jumping technique from lesson four prior to the fist warm-up game. The main teaching point for this lesson will strongly focus on safe landings (quiet landings) and what to do in the air (flight phase).

Lesson #6 - Learning to Train Jumping

Introduction

Beginner – In this lesson, will be practicing jumping. Here we will be finishing off our jump section
by adding a little technique while the students are in the air. This portion will focus on
reaching after the take of phase and before the landing.

Intermediate – In this lesson, will be practicing jumping. Here we will be finishing off our jump section by introducing the Triple Jump Technique.

Lesson #7 - Learn to Train Throwing

Introduction

Beginner – In this lesson, we will be practicing good throwing technique.

Intermediate – In this lesson, we will be introducing shot put technique.

Lesson #8 - Learn to Train Throwing

Introduction

Beginner – In this lesson, will be practicing Throwing. To accommodate the different seasons the activities have been labeled indoor or outdoor for your convenience. If you were planning on hosting an indoor Run, Jump Throw, Wheel Games at the end of this unit would typically take place in a gymnasium or other indoor space between November and April while there is snow on the ground.

Intermediate – In this lesson, will be practicing introducing the Javelin technique. If you were planning on hosting an Outdoor I Can Run, Jump Throw, Wheel Games at the end of this unit would typically take place in a Field or other Outdoor space between April and June while there is snow on the ground.

Lesson #9 - Learning to Train Throwing

Introduction

Beginner – In this lesson, will be practicing throwing. To accommodate the different seasons the activities have been labeled indoor or outdoor for your convenience. If you were planning on hosting an indoor Run, Jump Throw, Wheel Games at the end of this unit would typically take place in a gymnasium or other indoor space between November and April while there is snow on the ground.

Intermediate – In this lesson, will be introducing the Discus Technique. If you were planning on hosting an Outdoor I Can Run, Jump Throw, Wheel Games at the end of this unit would typically take place in a Field or other Outdoor space between April and June while there is snow on the ground.

THE GAMES

Introduction -Time to put it all together that you practiced & trained for!!!

Beginner – In this lesson, you will be participating in the I CAN Games. These events cant take place in any location and you do not need a track. If you are planning on hosting an indoor Run, Jump Throw, Wheel Games today then can use gymnasiums, school hallways, community halls, field house or other creative areas inside. If this is an outdoor event then you can use School fields, vacant parking lot, athletic park or other creative outdoor space.

Intermediate – In this lesson, you will be participating in the I Can Games. These events can’t take place in any location and you do not need a track. If you are planning on hosting an indoor, I Can Games today then can use gymnasiums, school hallways, community halls, field house or other creative areas inside. If this is an outdoor event then you can use school fields, vacant parking lot, athletic park or other creative outdoor space.

Each person must participate in a running event, jumping event and a throwing event. The events will be based on the events covered in the lessons.
